Japan Hangs on Wireless to Grasp Ubiquitous Dream

Japan's ubiquitous environment initiative continues to lead worldwide efforts and is advancing further. Almost all businesses in the country have ac-cess to the Internet. Same is also true for Japanese households wherein 90 percent of which have Internet connection. In terms of inexpensive communication fees and connection speed, Japan also tops worldwide ranking. The use of optical fiber cables for household connections, which deliver a maximum speed of 100Mbps, is on the rise. This also holds true for the adoption of wireless local-area network (LAN) connections. This year, UWB, which is much faster than other technologies, is expected to be applied into practical use. With the fusion of broadcasting, communication and wireless technologies, Japan is projected to be the very first country to have a ubiquitous society.
