Sharp Corp. tops the list of global manufacturers of photovoltaic power generation systems. Sales of the company however were not limited to photovoltaic power generation systems for housing and for public and industrial use; they are also expanding to applied prod ucts and system business. Nowadays, overseas sales of the systems account for a larger percentage of the total than sales in Japan. Sharp sees the solar cell market expanding in 2005, with growth brought about by the stepped up campaign toward reductions in greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. "The most crucial event for our business last year was the decision for the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol," said Takashi Tomita, Corporate Director & Group General Manager of the Solar Systems Group at Sharp. "During the International Conference for Renewable Energies in Bonn last June, we saw how nations in Europe are actively involved in this cause. And with Russia's ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, we believe the times will change toward real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions."
