Manufacturers Tussle for Market Share as Figures Soar for Flat TVs

Flat-panel display (FPD) TVs are entering the stage of full-scale permeation. Particularly, in Japan, with the expansion of the service area of terrestrial digital broadcasting, the digital TV market has been gathering momentum. According to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), shipments of 10-inch and larger LCD TVs in May hit 265,000 units, up 74 percent from one year ago. This figure surpasses the shipment of CRT TVs for the period under review, which stood at 240,000 units falling 32 percent from May 2004. This marks the first time that the shipment of LCD TVs topped that of CRT TVs for a single month's figure. From January to May 2005, shipments of LCD TVs surged 96 percent, nearly double year-to-year, totaling about 1.34 millidh units.
