Racing Time, China Charts Own Course in HDTV Broadcasts

By the time of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China hopes to have full-scale digital terrestrial high-definition (HD) TV broadcasting in place. Much effort has gone into reaching this goal, which began in 1995 when China's State Science and Technology Commission (SSTC) decided to carry out a digital HD project. The SSTC established the HDTV Technical Expert Executive Group (TEEG), a general group for digital HDTV headed by Professor Zhang Wenjun, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and embarked upon setting terrestrial standards that China would control as its own intellectual property. The SSTC and China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) would pay for the project.
