EU Broadcasters Debate HD, IPTV as Vendors Vie for Notice

"The influence of high definition (HD) in the broadcasting industry is immeasurable." With those words during his keynote address at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in September, Fritz Pleitgen, Director-General of the West German Broadcasting Organization (WDR) acknowledged one of the show's hottest topics this year. Pleitgen also is President-Elect of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The conference and show, which opened Sept. 7 and ran through Sept. 12, attracted 44,808 visitors and 13,653 exhibitors from 130 countries. Organizers say this is a 5 percent rise from the 42,815 visitors in 2005. They also added a 12th hall to the venue.
