Five Technologies Compete in Emerging Market for FPD TVs

Five technologies are competing to become the dominant technology in emerging market for flat-panel display devices. Representing these five technologies are LCDs; plasma display panels (PDPs); microdisplay rear-projection devices; surface-conduction electron-emitter displays (SEDs) and other field emission displays (FEDs); and electroluminescent (EL) displays, also called organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays (Fig. 1). However, for each of these technologies, improvements are needed to fully outperform CRTs, the established technology for displays. Manufacturers thus continue to develop improvements in the technologies for these five flat-panel displays. Each technology has its own strengths and weaknesses. The most advanced of these five are LCDs, PDPs and rear-projection devices (Table 1).
