Breakthroughs in Color Could Open Path for Inorganic EL TVs

While inorganic electroluminescence (inorganic EL) devices have appeared in many practical products, such devices have not been used in TVs because researchers have had difficulty developing inorganic EL devices that deliver full color. Not until around the turn of the century were high-luminance blue phosphors and the thick-film dielectric electroluminescence (TDEL) method developed, clearing the way for the application of inorganic EL devices to flat-screen TVs. Canada's iFire Technology, Ltd., which has been developing TDEL devices for commercialization, is currently making prototype 34-inch full-color displays on a pilot line. Meanwhile, more manufacturers are developing inorganic EL materials for LCD backlights. New horizons are opening for inorganic EL technology.
