Pioneer Corp. has developed a 16-layer optical disc, which has a recording capacity of 25GB per single recording layer, the same capacity as that of a Blu-ray Disc. Because the optical disc has 16 layers, the total capacity is around 400GB. Although it is a read-only optical disc, the technology can be applied to recordable discs. It has been difficult to obtain good-quality signals from multilayer optical discs in a stable manner due to the effect of unnecessary signals from adjacent layers that are not being played, as well as weak reproduction signals from each recording layer.
