SUMCO Plans Huge PV Plant for Extra-Large Ingots

SUMCO Corporation aims to increase its annual production capacity of multicrys-talline silicon wafers for photovoltaic (PV) generation to 1GW. To achieve this target, the company has been expanding its business and plans to construct a new plant with an initial production capacity of 300MW. The actual capacity, however still depends on the continuous supply of poly silicon, a primary material for multicrystalline silicon wafers. As a rationale for the production expansion, Kenjiro Shigematsu, President of SUMCO Corporation, said, "We are responding to the rapid increase of demand for both industrial-use and household-use silicon."
