ISDB-T Starts Up in Brazil After Winning Tough Contest

On June 29, 2006, the Government of Brazil announced that it would adopt a Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) system based on the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T), the system used in Japan. Thus, with the introduction of DTTB in Sao Paulo on December 2, 2007, Brazil became the first country outside Japan to put in place a system based on Japan's ISDB-T. The three internationally standardized DTTB systems are the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) system of the United States, the Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) system of Europe, and Japan's ISDB-T. Competition among these systems was intense in Brazil before Brazil made its selection.
