NHK STRL's R&D Efforts Yield Diverse Technologies

Without a doubt, NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) is one of the world's largest laboratories for broadcasting in terms of the number of research staff and the contents produced. From May 26 to 29, it held its 65th STRL Open House with the theme Experience the Future of Digital Broadcasting. NHK STRL, which is taking the lead role in developing broadcasting technology that is being used not only in Japan but in other parts of the world, had 36 exhibits during the Open House. These exhibits showcased the latest fruits of their researches, including Super Hi-Vision, Integral 3D TV, Automatic Speech Synthesis System for Weather Reports, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Reception System for Mobile Relay Broadcast, Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (LED) Display, and other user-friendly broadcasting technology, targeting beyond the era in which TV broadcasting would be fully digital.
