As this bibliography suggests, historical studies in technical, business, and scientific communication remain a vital part of communication studies and promise to remain so. The current work now covers a wide range of topics, and many other topics invite more intense examination. The research has moved from the study of the great writer and the simple teleological approach that emphasizes early work that anticipates current practice. One approach that appears to be ascendant could be called "functional" in that it examines the various ways in which the forms of professional discourse function within various intellectual, social, cultural, and historical contexts. This emphasis requires new methodologies, and scholars are turning to other fields, especially English studies, discourse analysis, and speech communication, among others to find them, and these new approaches, along with the established ones, promise a rich future in scholarship.
