The Baywood Series on Technical Communication was launched in 1973 by Jay R. Gould, professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2 years after he launched the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication (JTWC). The series was envisioned as an outlet to promote scholarship that could be explored only in book-length works. Those books took two forms: single-authored works and edited collections. From the beginning, the mission of the series was essentially identical to the mission of JTWC—seek original work that explores and expands the boundaries of our discipline. I was honored to be the third editor of the series, serving for 20 years in the position.
