PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFLUENTS DISCHARGED FROM SHRIMP FARM NEAR TUTICORIN

The effluents discharged from shrimp farms near Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, were analysed for their physico-chemical parameters. The effluents collected from semi intensive and intensive shrimp farms had values of pH [8.1 - 9.1; 8.3 - 9.2], chemical oxygen demand [31.4 - 62.3 mg/l; 42.3 - 78.3 mg/l], biochemical oxygen demand [10.4- 23.3 mg/l; 19.2 - 41.3 mg/l], total suspended solids [41.5 - 151.3 mg/l; 48.3 - 188.6 mg/l], dissolved oxygen [3.7 - 1.2 mg/l; 3.5 - 1.1 mg/l] and transparency [18.3 - 10.8 cm, 15.9 - 5.4 cm]. The values indicated that the effluents are unfit for aquaculture practices.
