In 2006, Google opened its office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in a building adjacent to the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. Google Vice President Andrew Moore came to speak to the faculty at the Tepper School of Business about Google's management practices. He talked about the open workplace, the democratic sharing of data and decisions, the freedom afforded to Google's engineers to spend 20% of their time on projects of their own, and other generous benefits. He talked about these things as if they had contributed to the company's success. When he invited questions, my hand shot up. "Is it possible," I asked, "that instead of these enlightened management practices being the cause of Google's success, that they are the consequence of it? Maybe you can afford to do all these things because you have a printing press for money through advertising revenue on the world's best search engine."
