This is an outstanding biography. It is a fast reading, fun story of a fascinating man, but it also provides a clear history of the rise of socialism in the nineteenth century and the surrounding European history. The story reveals a young Friedrich who, according to his enemies, drank too much, made love to too many women, and always stayed up till two or three in the morning. The accusations were true of Engels all of his life, to which one could add much singing, many vacations, and reading every book under the sun.
