Swedish Furniture: Folkhem Design of Wool, Jacaranda, Pine and Beech 1949-1970 is about a particularly eventful and dynamic period in the history of modern Swedish furniture, a period of abundance and diversity in furniture production; so much so that this era remains unparalleled, both before and after. Yet due to the shortcomings of existing historical overviews, the names of just a few designers have come to typify this period. The purpose of this ambitious book is, as Andreas Siesing, valuer at Bukowskis auction house, writes, to broaden our understanding of the staggering output of furniture in Sweden at the time and to shed light on the hundreds of forgotten furniture designs, their designers and manufacturers. The emphasis is on the years around 1960, when the Swedish furniture industry was booming and designers and manufacturers were surpassing each other.
