Relationship Construct in Modeling Information Systems: Identifying Relationships Based on Relation Element Theory

Systems analysis and design are vital steps in information systems development. One of the key constructs in modeling information systems during systems analysis and design is the relationship construct (Siau et al, 1995, 1996, 1997). Though commonly used, the relationship construct is poorly defined and lacks a strong theoretical foundation. In this paper, we define and classify the various relationships based on a theory in linguistics known as the relation element theory. This paper describes the theory, relates the theory to the relationship construct, and discusses the implication of the theory on understanding the relationship construct.
