Nucleation and growth of calcium carbonate by an electrochemicla scaling process

摘要

Calcium crbonate scale was electrochemically deposited form carbonically pure hard waters on bgold electrodes of an electrochemicla quartz crystal microbalance. Various data concerning the rate of the scaling process were deduced from the chronoelectrogravimetric responses. The cnucleaiton rate of CaCO_3 crystalks and the surface coverage were evaaluated form SEM image anlaysis. The effects of a surface pretreatment, the oxgyen concentration and the degree of hardness of the water were investigated. Transmission electron microsocpy was use dto identify the crystal strucutre of small nuclei. Calcite, aragonite or vaterite crystal formsl were obtained depending on experimentla conditions. It was shown tht at room temperautre calcite was predominantly formed for condtions whichwere favorable to a fast nucletion rate whereas the vaterite form is systematically obtained for experimental condtions leading to a slow nucleation rate. The temeprautre increase favoired thue formaiton of either aragonite needles or vaterite crystallites iwth a different morphology.
