Generally, earthmoving strategies are related to a number of available resources and site-specific conditions, with various interactions occurred among them. Therefore, a good plan or decision for a subsystem (such as haul distance and direction planning conducted by the authors in this paper) may not be really good for the entire earthmoving project, since many other processes and factors are not considered in the systems analysis. Thus, approaches that can integrate a variety of components and system features (such as parameter uncertainties) within a general modeling framework instead of examining them in isolation would be helpful for generating more realistic decision alternative. Good strategies for planning earthmoving activities should be able to optimally allocate and utilize various available resources for achieving an overall cost-saving objective.
