A number of concerns have been raised about the suitability of computer-mediated communication(CMC)for supporting socialization in educational settings. To investigate this issue, we developed a survey instrument that measures perceptions of CMC relating to socialization and administered the instrument in two different educational contexts: one that used CMC for general course-related and personal communication and one that used CMC to support team projects.
