摘要

A more apt title for this ambitious work might be "Chinese Women's Liberation and the Fifth Modernization." Zhou's work is centered on two fundamental premises: (1) "changing the one-party system has become the precondition for China's democratization" (p.xxiii); and, (2) "Chinese women's liberation cannot separate from the process of China's democratization" (p.xxiv). Underlying these ideas is a more softly spoken notion that the liberation of Chinese women can be accomplished neither through the ideological assertions of Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong-Deng Xiaoping-Jiang Zemin thought nor through the uncritical acceptance of Western feminist thought.
