Predicting the future of relations between Taiwan and mainland China is not easy. There are so many uncertainties, such as whether the mainland will remain politically stable, who the next president of Taiwan will be, and whether the United States would defend Taiwan militarily were it attacked by the mainland. Making sense of the future is made easier by the publication of this volume of papers by academics, many of them based at universities in Taiwan. Topics that authors focus on include Taiwan party politics, national identity in Taiwan, the effects of economic interdependence on cross-Strait relations and the role of the taishang, or Taiwan businesspeople in mainland China, in promoting peace.
