The role of intellectuals in modern Chinese revolutions has always been an intriguing topic, but as the author points out, most studies seem to focus on the role of Beijing and Shanghai intellectuals rather than local ones. This book is one of the few that focuses on the local but connects to the national by describing Yun Daiying and his social and political activities in Wuhan and elsewhere. Rahav uses this case to emphasize how grassroots study groups and social organizations developed into political parties in the May Fourth era.
