摘要

Two puzzles motivate this book. First, why do people in China express such high levels of trust for an authoritarian government in opinion surveys? Second, why do many people in Taiwan appear to want a government less democratic than the one they actually have? This book seeks to contribute to debates about authoritarian resilience in China and democratic fragility in East Asia.
