The discussion mainly refers to the first benchmark arch with which the proposed nonlinear approach to the assessment of masonry arch bridges is compared. The proposed procedure (Brencich and De Francesco 2004) does not take into account the arch/fill interaction which, on the contrary, was found in the tests to give relevant contributions to the actual load-carrying capacity of the tested arch (Melbourne and Gilbert 1995). In addition, a kinematic limit-analysis approach would foresee a load-carrying capacity that is approximately half the experimental value, showing that the fill contribution accounts for roughly half the ultimate load of the bridge. Therefore, the good agreement between the numerical and experimental data is considered somehow troublesome.
