1. Transparency What if transparency were reem-ployed not only as a visual but also textual process? Imagine a series of writings whose content is identical in certain points or perceptibly similar in others so that ultimately such overlapping texts echo one another through a series of rhythmic analogies and repetitions. This compositional principle informs Modernity Unbound, a collection of ten essays, all but one previously published as articles in journals such as Assemblage, Any, AA Files and Grey Room or as chapters in edited anthologies, here incisively rearranged by the author shortly before his death in January, 2011, and published soon after by the Architectural Association, London.
