G. A. Bremner's book, Imperial Gothic: Religious Architecture and High Anglicanism in the British Empire, c 1840-1870, tells two different stories. One of these, which can be quickly summarized, is central not only to the way in which the history of early modern and modern architecture is being written today but also to how architecture is being practiced. The other, while crucial to an understanding of the relation between style and ideas in nineteenth-century architecture, will be of interest primarily to historians of the architecture of that period and most easily comprehensible to those already versed in the understanding of Anglican theology of the period that underpins much existing writing on the Gothic Revival in the English-speaking world.
