Multipole induction: a novel formulation of multiple scattering of scalar waves

A novel method of formulating and solving two‐dimensional multiple scattering problems is described. The formalism is based on the concept of the ``induction'''' of multipoles in a scatterer by an incident wave, and the subsequent coupling of multiple scattering obstacles through such ``induction''''. This model is applied to the formulation of the matrix equations describing the multiple scattering of scalar waves by two‐ and three‐cylinder configurations. Predictions for the latter case are compared with detailed near‐field measurements at 23.5 GHz of the intensity and phase of the diffracted wave behind three 1.0λ‐diam conducting cylinders.
