Unusual magnetic frustration in Lu-doped Gd_5Ge_4

Magnetic properties of the (Gd_(0.975)Lu_(0.025))_5Ge_4 alloy have been measured and compared with the parent Gd_5Ge_4 compound. Lu doping weakens the ferromagnetic interactions in Gd_5Ge_4 and this effect is much stronger than what may be expected from a simple dilution effect. An unusual magnetic frustration, likely induced by the kinetic arrest of the O(Ⅱ) antiferromagnetic-O(Ⅰ) ferromagnetic magnetostructural transformation as reported in the parent Gd_5Ge_4 has been observed.
