1.The use of diatomaceous earth (DE) combined with grade 509 filter paper (Wort-9 [1]), 0.45-μm polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) syringe filter discs, glass-fiber filter paper, and vacuum filtration through 0.45-μm cellulose acetate membrane filters have been shown to reduce the turbidity of production wort samples and laboratory-mashed worts. 2.It was difficult to consistently clarify production worts or lab mashes to be considered "free of turbidity" as defined in Beer-10A (1). Laboratory mashes were more difficult to clarify than were the production worts. 3.Turbidity was effectively removed from wort with 0.45-μm PTFE syringe filter discs, but some color appears to have been removed, with the most significant color removal in the initial portions through the filter discs. 4.Turbidity was slightly higher in the initial portion of wort filtered through glass-fiber filter paper.
