A research laboratory based at China's northeastern Tianjin University announced in May that it has demonstrated a prototype lightweight aero engine for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Tianjin Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute (TICERI) said in a statement that the indigenously designed and builtTDO Lightweight Aero Engine engineering prototype - which was designed by the institute but built by the Chongqing-based engine manufacturer Zongshen Power Machinery Company - successfully completed an inaugural flight aboard the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation's (CASC's) CaiHong-3/ Rainbow-3 (CH-3) tactical UAV in late April.
