Sonic boom: Sonobuoy technology shrinks to meet changed ASW needs

First developed and deployed during the Second World War, the sonobuoy remains a critical tool in the search, localisation, tracking, and attack phases of an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mission. These expendable devices, typically deployed from maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) and shipborne helicopters, provide a deploy-able acoustical signal source and reception capability for underwater sound: received signals are transmitted to monitoring units that process the signal for target analysis and classification, and record for replay and post-event analysis.
