China's defence minister has strongly criticised extra-regional navies operating in the South China Sea, even as the country announced a series of military drills in the disputed maritime region. Speaking at the annual security conference known as the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on 2 June, General Wei Fenghe described the geopolitical climate in the South China Sea as one that is "improving towards greater stability", pointing to progress made during talks with countries such as Singapore and Vietnam.
