Spanish troops boost UNIFIL strength to 5,000

About 550 Spanish troops were sealifted into Lebanon on 15 September to form part of the UN's peacekeeping force - UNIFIL 2 - and patrol alongside the Lebanese Army following the conflict between Israel and the Islamic Resistance - the armed wing of the south Lebanese Shi'ite Party of God (Hizbullah). TheSpanishLPDSPS Galicia transported490 marines to Tyre, accompanied by 50-60 other staff including force protection units and air crew support staff from the Alvaro de Bazan-class frigate SPS Almirante Don Juan De Borbon, and the Newport-class landing ship SPS Pizarro. It is expected the battalion will reach its promised full strength of 1,100 troops by the end ofOctober.
