Classic surveillance systems and technologies are still in use and widely deployed across the globe for basic air surveillance, providing air traffic controllers with situational awareness to safely manage the skies. New technologies have been introduced to the market such as ADS-B, multilateration or space-based surveillance, initiating a transition to IP also in surveillance communication. However, those technologies are all designed to provide surveillance for existing airframes such as commercial airlines, jets, general aviation and helicopters. Recent studies reveal that there is a big change in the types of aircraft in the sky. CANSO specifically talks about drones or space traffic to pose a new challenge to the existing ATM infrastructure. Forecasts of expected numbers still vary a great deal. According to SESAR, some seven million consumer leisure drones are expected to be operating across Europe and a fleet of 400,000 are expected to be used for commercial and government missions in 2050. Commercial and professional users are expected to demand drones in both rural and urban settings and will be reliant on beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) capabilities to be permitted.
