Issues and Ideas for Moving the Atlanta, GA, USA, Region and Its Freight Forward

The Georgia Department of Transportation conducted a study to identify issues affecting trucks' use of the interstate system in Atlanta. A second objective was to provide feasible strategies to increase mobility and safety for the general public and the trucking industry as well as reduce air pollution and travel delays on the regions road system. A guidebook for strategies and implementation plans was prepared and next steps have begun. Since the passage of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), freight transportation has emerged as a significant public policy issue at the national, state, regional and local levels. The United States' infrastructure includes thousands of miles of designated interstate highways for international, interstate and regional commerce as well as other public highways and roads connecting to major airports, seaports, transit centers and intermodal rail facilities.
