Throughout the years, many studies have shown that travel time, delays, vehicle stops and fuel consumption can be reduced substantially if signalized intersections are timed properly, That is, the signal time settings are optimized to minimize delays and stops to all approaches at intersections. Many of these studies reported a range of benefit-to-cost ratios as high as 100-to-1. Reductions in travel time, stops, delays and fuel consumption also have been reported at a range of 10 percent to 40 percent.
