Designated Parking: A California First

In the last months of 1989, the Belvedere City Council enacted an ordinance that amended sections of its municipal code and thereby established the first known Designated Parking Program in California. Belvedere is a residential island community on San Francisco Bay with virtually no business district. Many of the streets in Belvedere are twisting, winding roads 10 feet (ft) to 16 ft wide with intermittent wide areas that allow enough room for vehicle parking on one side only.
