Metro Detroit's Incident Management Program-Applying ITS Technology

Increased use of computer and communication technology for traffic information and control is under way in metropolitan Detroit, Mich. Three major efforts are under way to help improve the metropolitan area's ability to detect traffic incidents and to promptly relay this information to the traveling public. In one effort, the Michigan Department of Transportation has installed traffic sensors, closed circuit TV cameras, ramp meters and changeable message signs on 32 miles of the Detroit freeway system and plans an extension of intelligent transportation systems in the next few years.
