Origin-Destination Travel Surveys in the 1990s Using Microcomputers

Traditional methods of collecting and analyzing roadside origin-destination travel survey data are being replaced. New microcomputer technol-ogy-a significant enhancement to clipboard, pencil and paper-is now available to conduct roadside interviews. Since June 1991, these new techniques were employed successfully on five major origin-destination projects for 169 roadside survey days in Florida (see Table 1). Collection periods range from four hours to 12 hours on various interstates, expressways, state highways and county roads throughout the state (see Figure 1.). Transportation planners and engineers will benefit greatly from these new microcomputer-based procedures.
