Transportation Planning for a Large Special Event: The Woodstock '94 Experience

Overall, the transportation plan was clearly a success. There obviously would have been a transportation disaster in the area without the plan and its implementation. Excellent private-public cooperation made this success possible. The transportation consultant alone spent thousands of person hours on the plan and its implementation, and the public agencies involved spent even more hours. The feedback from local officials and state agencies has been extremely positive. Certainly, if a third Woodstock is proposed—and there is already talk of a 30th reunion in 1999— there will be much less skepticism regarding transportation impacts. The many lessons learned in 1994 could be applied to help make a "Woodstock '99" even more successful.
