Development of a Kanji Information Management System for Kanji CAI

This paper describes a kanji information management system (KIS) to support kanji CAI systems for handwriting. There are many researches to decompose kanji characters into some small parts. The feature of our approach is to decompose kanji characters including the stroke orders and the relative positions between the parts. To manage the information, we developed KIS. It consists of two components. One is a compiler for kanji definition language KDL and the other is an interpreter for kanji manipulation language KML. By using KDL, we can define the kanji characters, the stroke orders and the relative positions. Moreover, we can retrieve kanji information and generate the HTML output by using KML. We defined l,006 kanji characters for the elementary school children by u8ing KDL, and analyzed the characteristics by using KML. The experience suggests that KIS is an indispensable system when we examine the kanji learning materials.
