While Syria's presence in Lebanon was a constant source of friction with the Lebanese and Israeli governments, so was its hosting of militant Palestinian groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Despite pressure on Syrian President Bashr al-Assad from Washington following the fall of Saddam Hussein, the Syrians were still supporting at least seven organisations deemed undesirable by America.
