The challenge of urban poverty and inequalities in developing world cities: issues and options for the sanitation and water sector

A major concern is how, despite the growing urban population and concentration of poverty in urban slums, policymakers continue to de-prioritise urban poverty. The Department for International Development's (DFID) new Water and Sanitation Policy focuses its efforts at rural areas although it recognises the distinct challenges of urban areas (DFID 2009).
