Organizing major sporting events such as football's World Cup and the Olympic Games has turned into one of the most important phenomena of economic and cultural mobilization in the hosting countries and cities. Such events are becoming increasingly used as a powerful lever for urban renewal and a catalyst for large public and private investments (De Moragas & Botella 1995; Gratton & Henry 2001).
