The Rationalist Reader, Architecture and Rationalism in Western Europe 1920-1940 and 1960-1990

This book lays claim to be the first anthology of Rationalism and Neo-Rationalism and presents texts by well-known architects and theorists of both the twentieth-century periods named in the title. We have writings by Otto Wagner, J. J. P. Oud, Adolf Loos, Adolf Behne, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Auguste Perret, Aldo Rossi, Hans Schmidt, Giorgio Grassi, Vittorio Gregotti, Leon Krier, O. M. Ungers and Hans Kollhoff, as well as texts by contemporary researchers such as Pier Vittorio Aureli, Angelika Schnell, Dennis Doordan, Richard Etlin, David Rifkind, Mary Louise Lobsinger and others. The editors have made a substantial number of new translations into English for this work. Invited contributions by Alan Colquhoun, Charles Rattray, Thilo Hilpert (Wiesbaden), Nicholas Bullock (Cambridge) and Henk Engel (Delft), introduce the respective periods.
