Analysis of a novel combined heat exchange strategy applied for cooling towers

Excessive heat transfer in cooling towers causes not only large evaporation loss, but also the diffusion of rain-fog that brings problems of bacterial diffusion and environmental pollution. A novel cooling tower employing a multi-unit combined heat exchange strategy and a novel plate-heat-exchanger-packing were proposed, which mainly realize the replacement of direct heat exchange with partition in a low-temperature environment, thereby reduce evaporation loss. The heat and mass transfer characteristic of the cooling tower is obtained under three kinds of arrangements during different seasons through the experiment. The results showed that the novel cooling tower has excellent water-saving performance, it is expected that the annual water saving can reach 21.5%. Most importantly, the ambient temperature is the key factor influencing the evaporation loss. Therefore, an effective heat exchange strategy is provided.
