In an effort to improve student learning, a series of active learning strategies were implemented to complement the lecture-based instructions in a merchandising mathematics course. Among the active learning opportunities, a peer mentor programme called student success initiative (SSI) was introduced. One-way analysis of variance and qualitative focus group data revealed that active learning participation significantly enhanced final grade outcomes for students who self-identify as challenged with mathematics content and participated in SSI. Class attendance and homework completion were the most effective active learning strategies for all students in the class. Students reacted positively to their peer mentoring experiences in SSI, and overall, to the availability of activities that enabled them to learn actively in the course.
