Ecological biomarkers: indicators of ecotoxicological effects

The biomarker concept was initially developed with the purpose of the early diagnosis of pathological status and for use in mammalian toxicology. At the beginning of the 1990s, ecotoxicologists became interested in the concept, which stimulated important debate, and at present it has been widely accepted and incorporated in the water management practices.
